Download the Powerpoint above and review it. I really think that you will agree that telecommuting has great benefits.

1. Eliminate the time, trouble, and expense of physically commuting to work. This gives the average person an extra hour per day, right off the top, you can also translate this to mean your personal time, more time with the family, less stress, and general health improvements.

2. Having just half its work force telecommute as little as one day a week will cut costs down by 10%. Telecommuting enables employers to reduce their office space and real estate costs, as well as lower their administrative expenses such as the need for desktop computers, office furniture and land lines.

3. Also allows the organization to reach long distances to find qualified people to work

4. Environmental benefits include cutting down on air pollution, use of non-renewable energy sources, traffic congestion, and savings in energy and petroleum consumption.

5. Workers commute an average of 10,000 miles per year and consume 67 billion gallons of gas. Telecommuting reduces vehicle miles traveled per year by more than 35 billion and saves almost 2 billion gallons of gas.

I think that the findings by a survey of 2,000 telecommuters at Cisco Inc. Says it all.

----69% higher productivity from working out home

-----83% said their ability to communicate With coworkers is the same if not better when working remotely

-----80% noted an improved quality of life when given option of working at home

-----91% said it’s important to overall satisfaction which can lower turnover rate

Going Digital

Using Adobe Acrobat is a great tool to help in going green. Forms can be sent, filled out, saved and accessed all online without printing. Employees can upload documents to their personal workspaces online so that they have no need to print the materials. The video below elaborates on the benefits on this technology and will aid in setting up the hardware. The Expert Village line of youtube.com videos are very helpful. Why Should You Go Green?

I found another great blog, The Green Workplace. I would like you to go examine her posts and take a look around. Not all the content on the site pertains to the workplace, but she offers great tips and videos. I have included the results of the study included on her site. I think you will be able to understand the societal l implications of corporations going green.

Sustainability

According to the Environmental Protection Agency's website Sustainability calls for, "policies and strategies that meet society's present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Click the link above and then comment on what you think sustainability is. I think that it means not over indulging in things now, so that the future can be better. It means working together socially, financially and independently to make a better world.

Top 25 Companies Going Green

I would like you to take the time to examine some major corporations steps to go global.

Also I found a great video on how Google has transformed the workplace. I am sure they spent a lot of money in the process to go green, but they will repp the benefits in the years to come. If new companies can think green when creating their corporations they will be able to reap the benfifts right away. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Starting Small

The first thing that corporations without a large amount of funding for their green programs can do is

1. Shut down computers completely DAILY. Do not just log off. Encourage employees to NOT use standby mode because that still uses energy. Have management check that all computers are off at night before leaving the facility.

2. Turn off all printers, scanners and fax machines DAILY. Over the weekend unplug all unnecessary devices.

3. Think ahead. Corporations can gradually begin purchasing laptops when current desktop computers begin to malfunctions. Desktops always have to be plugged in versus laptops that use batteries.

4. Digitalize your files and reduce paper ways. Switch to a fax modem instead of a fax machine. Fax modems can save paperless documents. Adobe Acrobat ( we will discuss later) creates paperless forms that can be transmitted, filled out and sent back by the web

5. Use recycled, post consumer content, minimum chlorine bleached paper. Use misprints as scratch paper in the office.

6. Make employees include a tagline on their email stating: Please think carefully about the environment before printing this email.

7. When printing is unavoidable, use the DRAFT mode, and make sure double-sided printing in your default. This will help save paper and ink.

8. Set up corporate sponsored carpools and encourage carpooling.

What is going green?

Going Green simply means being environmentally responsible and cautious, making smarter business decisions, and protecting our planet. Some things that we will take a further look into are digitalizing your files using Adobe Acrobat, limiting printing in the office, telecommuniting and simple tips for going green in general. Remember, we understand that not all companies can invest in totally new technologies, spaces and renovations that are avaliable for companies trying to go green, but we do NOT understand not attempting to change the little things.

Many corporations may feel that their individual actions can not promote change, but they are sadly mistaken. Everyone plays a part in the environment and even the smallest change can have an impact.
